SUBEB Strengthens Commitment to EdoSTAR Teachers Amid Fellowship Review and Strategic Educational Enhancements

On Thursday, 10th April 2025, Barr. Mrs. Onomen Goodness Briggs, Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), convened a high‑level meeting with representatives of the EdoStar Teachers Fellowship to address the status of their engagement following the expiration of their three‑year fellowship contracts on 28 February 2025. In her opening remarks, Mrs. Briggs expressed profound gratitude to His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his decisive intervention in authorizing the payment of March 2025 salaries to EdoStar Fellows despite the formal conclusion of their contractual term. She underscored that this act exemplifies the administration’s steadfast commitment to sustaining quality basic education across Edo State.

Mrs. Briggs proceeded to outline the comprehensive verification exercise conducted by SUBEB to determine the number of Fellows who remain actively engaged in the programme. Based on the verification outcomes, the Board has submitted two key recommendations for gubernatorial consideration: the extension of the fellowship tenure and/or the permanent absorption of eligible teachers into the Edo State Teaching Service. She assured participants that the Board eagerly anticipates the Governor’s formal decision on these recommendations at the earliest practicable opportunity.

In a unified advisory, Dr. Austin Osegbe (Director, School Support Services), Mr. Goodluck Edomwandagbon (Director, Quality Assurance), and Mrs. Eunice Onoabhagbe (Director, Special Programs) appealed to the EdoStar Fellows to maintain professional decorum and exercise patience while awaiting the Government’s pronouncement. They reaffirmed SUBEB’s unwavering dedication to upholding rigorous professional standards and safeguarding the welfare of all teaching personnel within the state’s basic education sector. Hon. Pastor Mrs. Angela Ekiuwa Okpamen, Board Member representing Edo South, commended Mrs. Briggs’s proactive leadership and reminded the Fellows to remain appreciative of the administration’s ongoing support.

In their response, the EdoStar Teachers; Mr. Joel Ozogbu, Victor Erhenhi, Austin Omokah, Ogbewi Osakpolor and Miss Evelyn Obviolokun and Charity Sunday, pledged their unreserved loyalty to Governor Okpebholo’s administration. They reaffirmed their commitment to discipline and to delivering high‑quality basic education to children across Edo State. The meeting concluded on an affirmative note, with both SUBEB and EdoStar representatives expressing resolve to sustain constructive engagement and collaborative partnership in the pursuit of educational excellence.
