The Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has taken swift action following a disturbing case of child abuse involving a pupil of Okouve Primary School, Oghede, in Ovia North East Local Government Area.
On Thursday, May 29, 2025, a Primary Four teacher, Mrs. Osifo Okungbowa, noticed a serious injury on the neck of ten-year-old pupil, Glory Joseph. When questioned, the child explained that she was assaulted days earlier, on Sunday, May 25, by her “big aunty,” identified as Mercy, and Mercy’s two daughters. The girl said they tied a headscarf around her neck and beat her in the stomach with a mortar pestle while she was alone at home in Uholor Barracks. The attackers fled when her caregiver returned.Further revelations by the child uncovered a long history of abuse. She stated that she had previously been forced to drink cement, and on another occasion, was stabbed.
According to her, this mistreatment had gone on for years, often under accusations of witchcraft. Glory currently lives with her grandmother and an aunt named Blessing, following the death of her mother.Upon receiving the report from the class teacher, Headmistress Mrs. Agbonile Glory immediately escalated the matter. She notified the Evbotubu Police Station and the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA). Together with other school officials, she filed a formal complaint at the station. The police promptly launched an investigation and ordered the arrest of the suspects. So far, one suspect, identified as Miracle, has been apprehended and is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Benin City. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the two remaining suspects, Mercy and Vivian, who are still at large.

Following the report, the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board, under the leadership of Chairman Hon. Omonzane Ebanehita Sonia, swung into action to ensure the child’s safety. Working in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender Issues, the Board facilitated the immediate transfer of Glory Joseph to a secure shelter, where she is now receiving medical attention and emotional support.
SUBEB’s Child Safeguarding and Protection Officer, Mrs. Osemwengie Isoken Betty, has been actively involved in the case, ensuring that all protocols for the protection of vulnerable children are followed. She has worked closely with social welfare authorities, the school, and the police to coordinate the necessary interventions for Glory’s immediate safety and long-term well-being.SUBEB expressed concern over the child’s condition and commended the school for promptly reporting the incident.
The Board reiterated its commitment to child safety and pledged to continue working with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served and that no child in the school system is subjected to abuse or neglect.
Edo SUBEB Chairman Hon. Omonzane Ebanehita Sonia stated, “This case is deeply troubling, and we are working closely with law enforcement and the Ministry of Women Affairs to protect the child and pursue justice. Every child in our schools deserves a safe environment to learn and grow.”Investigations are ongoing. SUBEB and the police continue to call on the public to provide any useful information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects.
