Barrister Mrs. Onomen Briggs, Executive Chairman of Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has called for a more holistic and inclusive approach to education. She made this call during her talk at the opening ceremony of the Catholic Education Conference held at Lumen Christi International School Hall in Arue, Uromi.
“In our view, education must nurture not only the mind but also the spirit and social conscience,” Mrs. Briggs said. “Schools should go beyond academics to help shape respectful, responsible, and globally aware citizens.” She explained that both the Global Compact on Education and Catholic education share a common goal: to develop students in every aspect of life—intellectually, spiritually, and socially.
Mrs. Briggs also stressed the importance of building strong partnerships between educators, policymakers, and communities. “Collaboration is key to overcoming challenges like limited resources and resistance to change,” she remarked, emphasizing that united efforts can pave the way for innovative solutions that benefit both students and society.
The Catholic Education Conference, held from February 11 to 14, 2025, was hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Uromi under the leadership of Most Rev. Dr. Donatus Ogun (O.S.A). The event brought together Directors and Secretaries of Catholic Education from across Nigeria and was part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Benin City, which includes the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City and the dioceses of Uromi, Auchi, Issele-Uku, Warri, and Bomadi.
Education stakeholders praised Mrs. Briggs for her clear and insightful remarks. They emphasized the need for closer cooperation between religious and governmental institutions to raise educational standards.
